TERM 1 WEEK 1 NEWSLETTER

Hello,

It’s the start of a new academic year and we would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to our society, so whether you are a returning veteran or a new recruit, we hope to provide you with an action-packed year of events - proving once and for all that we are the best society around!

Firstly, some of our eagle-eyed members returning from last year will have noticed that we have had a complete overhaul of our branding over the summer including a new logo. And although we are still the same great society we have always been, we feel that these changes are great way to help unify the society and achieve better integration between our subsections.

Secondly, if you are new member joining us this year, welcome to our society! It’s always great to meet new people who have a similar passion for all things roleplaying and games related. And in the spirit of meeting new people I would like to introduce your exec for the year;

President: Nigel Heathcote

Secretary: Dan Tough

Treasurer: Asa Cremin

SPECIAL EVENTS

Tabletop RPGs one shot taster session

Saturday the 7th 11:00 to 22:00, Meeting in the Social Sciences Cafe

Are you interested in trying out some tabletop RPGs without having to commit to a campaign? Well, on Saturday the 7th we have the event for you. Come on down and try one of the many one-shot RPG adventures, with a pub social afterwards at the Phantom Coach. For the unaware, a one-shot RPG session is just like a campaign using the same system with the same rules, however, instead of investing weeks and months on the adventure, it is designed to be completed in one sitting. This gives you the perfect opportunity to experience a variety of roleplaying systems letting you make a better decision on which campaign is right for you. And if you have never given RPGs a shot before then this is the best way to learn how everything works in a friendly and engaging environment.

Fresher LARP adventure

Sunday 12:00 to 18:00, OC0.01 Oculus

Sitting around a table roleplaying is all well and good, but sometimes you want to live the adventure, and with our weekly live action adventure you can. For those of you unfamiliar with live action roleplaying this involves donning armour and robes, selecting your preferred LARP weapon, and taking part in actual combat (don’t worry the weapons are form padded). The first LARP adventure of the term will be especially tailored for freshers. With our excellent LARP rep and regulars on hand to help you through character creation and the basics of combat. We have a massive collection of armour, robes, fantasy clothing, and weapons so you can be whatever type of character you can imagine.

WARGAMING

Monday 17:00 to 22:00, B2.01 Science Concourse

We start the week of with some epic battle and cunning strategy at our weekly Wargaming session. So if you are looking to prove your tactical prowess we have games of Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 9th age, Warmachine, Hoardes, X-wing, Dropzone commander, and Dropfleet commander all happening weekly. And don’t worry if your preferred system isn’t on that somewhat exhaustive list, we are always looking for new games to add to it. “But don’t I need a collection of miniatures to take part in these games?” I hear you ask, well that’s where you’re wrong as we have a large collection of society armies covering most of these systems to be used.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING

Tuesday 18:00 to 22:00, B20.04/05 Science Concourse

Our first draft of the term will also be our last of Amonkhet with a specific emphasis on getting new players involved in the format. Our regulars will be on hand to go over the basic of draft with you as well as all the tips and tricks you will need to succeed. Beginner draft pods will be arranged to make sure you experience your first foray into the format in a relaxing and rewarding environment. As always booster draft will cost £7, making it the cheapest around.

BOARDGAMES

Wednesday 14:00 to 22:00, B2.02 Science Concourse

Wednesday is our weekly boardgames day with a mega 8 hours session each week. This is by far our most popular event of the week and is a great place to get to know your fellow members over a friendly boardgame. These sessions have a drop in nature so feel free to pop by if you have 30 minutes free for a quick game, or even better, stay for the whole 8 hours while ignoring all of your other responsibilities. Our massive collection of games covers word games, quick fire games, cooperative games, and epic strategy games so we are sure to have something to catch your interest.

CASUAL CARD GAMES

Thursday 16:00 to 22:00, OC0.5 Oculus

Do you like your card games to be a bit more relaxing with a less competitive nature than booster draft, or maybe one event a week just isn’t enough for you? Whatever it is we have you covered at casual card games, with a friendly group that is eager for games of Android Netrunner, Magic: The Gathering, and Yu-Gi-Oh. This can range from testing your latest deck for that upcoming event to a crazy game of commander. And as always, not having a deck is no excuse, as we have plenty to lend out to get you started.

TABLETOP ROLEPLAYING GAMES

Saturday 12:00 to 22:00, H0.05/H1.03/H5.22 Humanities Building

This Saturday is our introduction to RPGs session that was mentioned earlier. Not only will this be an amazing event in itself but it’s also a great opportunity to meet the Games Masters that will be running campaigns over the coming term and getting yourself signed up. And talking about signing up, our website is the best place to do this as it allows you to check how full each campaign is, be sure to sign up early as spaces go fast. We are also always looking for more people will to run games, so if you have one ready be sure message me so that it can be advertised in the newsletter.

LIVE ACTION ROLEPLAYING

Sunday 12:00 to 18:00, OC0.01 Oculus

As mentioned earlier in the newsletter, this week’s LARP adventure will be a special one specifically designed to introduce new players into the system. Covering everything from character creation to the basics of combat. So, if you fancy taking part come on down, no equipment or experience is required and it’s the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

SUMMER NEWS

As many of you know, we are still a pretty active society over the summer with wargames and boardgames running throughout. With that in mind I would like to highlight some recent summer news. Last weekend our wargames regulars attended a major tournament for Dropzone Commander, where they achieved the highest overall team score representing our society, with our wargames rep James also taking second place and best painted army. Due to this being the first of this kind of tournament, James is now ranked second in the world meaning that if anyone happens to beat him at Dropzone on a Monday then they can take that title. At least, I think that’s how it works...
