L5R: Fate of an Empire

This is the general discussion thread for Fate of an Empire.

The first session will be character creation followed by an introductory scenario of your characters undergoing their gempukku - coming of age ceremony - at the Topaz Championship. If you're unfamiliar with the setting or the system, don't worry, all will be explained. This will be held tomorrow, Saturday 13th from 18:00 - 22:00 in S1.69.

Unfortunately, PDFs of the rulebook are not generally available at the moment, but you are welcome to familiarise yourself with the various previews on FFG's website.

In addition to the Great Clans, you are welcome to make a character from the Mantis Clan, which will involve its unique challenges and opportunities.

Sweet, we get to be samurai sailor/pirates. At the moment, I'm leaning towards a character somewhat inspired by Cheng I Sao (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p2lhxUqMMQ), something of a badass bureaucrat. Given that the characters are 'not yet samurai', would a position as a quartermaster or similar on a ship be too much?

I will explain things in more detail at the start of tomorrow's session, but your characters all begin as young members of a samurai family, sent to participate in the Topaz Championship as your gempukku, proving you are an adult and worthy of becoming a samurai.

It will be a ways before your character can qualify as a bureaucrat, but they may have been entrusted with looking after their ship's stores... those Mantis have strange customs.

OK, that makes sense. So, just a samurai-in-training with a head for numbers, I guess. I usually play mage-type characters (wizards, sorcerers, clerics, psychics etc) so I thought I'd give something a bit new a go.

It doesn't contain the schools as they are now, and there have been some changes during the beta, but it should serve as a reasonable reference until the new core book is available as a pdf.

Okay, so, turns out people can't do next Saturday or the third Saturday from now, which leaves us with only 1 Saturday left this term. There's also no chance you'd be able to complete the next scenario in one session, so L5R is on hold until next term.
