Welcome to Week 2! The long-awaited sequel to week 1, being written because I'm this close to buying a bunch of RPGs and I need to be doing something that means I can't look at them and be tempted.
❗ Announcements ❗
🗓️ Exec Meeting
We're having an exec meeting on Friday the 15th of October (that's this Friday) from 5 to 6pm in B2.02, discussing Welcome Week, merchandise, our plans for next term, and formalising equipment lending and society collaboration guidelines. There'll be a link to the minutes in next week's newsletter, or technically we can't stop you showing up if you bring a mask, are willing to be at the back, and want to sit in on it?
💻 Do you want to get involved with the programming side of Tabletop?
I'm handing over to Finnbar for this one, as I refuse to acknowledge the existence of computers on principle.
Hi all!
As you might know by now, I'm the Web Admin, which means I deal with the software that Tabletop uses. In previous years, this has been a fairly solitary job with the Web Admin and maybe one other exec writing code to improve the website - which is not ideal given that it ends up with very few people being confident with the society's code.
As such, I'm excited to announce the existence of #computers-were-a-mistake - a channel on our Discord server available to anyone who would like to get involved in working on the society's code. The society's code is already open source and will remain that way but the channel is a useful place to discuss changes you may want to make to it. Note that joining isn't a commitment - by joining we expect you want to work on the code, but you don't have to implement x features per month or whatever.
There are currently two active projects in the society - our website (built in Python with Django) and the upcoming Tablebot Discord bot (built in Haskell with discord-haskell). So, if you have programming skills and want to be involved in either of those, you can join the channel in #roles!
This is a great opportunity if you're thinking that you would like to be Web Admin in the exec next year, or if you just feel like doing some extra programming as a side project. Let me know if you have any questions.

💭 What happened last week? 💭
Lewis had just terrible luck. (Or I guess more accurately Jon's Droids had exceptional luck), getting 16 hits (50/50 odds for each dice), on 16 dice in an absolutely wild streak of dice luck in X-Wing, wiping out one of Lewis's far more expensive ships before it could do anything. To quote the victim on the matter: "I am experiencing A Time."
To balance out that honestly ridiculous dose of droid luck, a game of Aces High happened which revealed the one weakness of droids - being shot at, with one droid dying, respawning, and dying again before anyone else took damage.
Extra Bonus End Bit
Inspired partly by the discussion on the discord of the origins of the names of most of the accomodation blocks, I present a table of Tabletop Discord Intro questions from a darker timeline. "Hannah what are the odds I'll ever be able to use this table in an RPG" it's pretty much guaranteed as long as you're willing to force it. Anywhere, here it is. "Hello, @name. If you want, feel free to introduce yourself in #intros with your pronouns, interests, and...
- ...The Hogwarts House you were assigned upon arrival.
- ...Which exec member features in your recurring dream about cities.
- ...The name of the city where you will die.
- ...Which department most recently hired a hitman to kill you.
- ...The faction you swear your eternal loyalty to.
- ...How you managed to find us, despite our best efforts.
Wash your hands, wear a mask, stay safe, and come play some games with us 💛
