Don't look at me like that it's what Finnbar told me and they've been in the society long enough to know its secrets.
❗ Announcements ❗
📣 The AGM - Co-op and Web Admin
Just a reminder this week, as I will continue to do every week for the foreseeable future, the AGM is on the 2nd of March, in B2.02, from 7-9pm - remember, you need membership two weeks beforehand to vote!!! - if you want to find out more about the AGM check out the forum thread.
First up today is (checks notes) oh I should've planned this in advance because it's me the Communications and Operations Officer!
- Writes and promotes the weekly newsletter
- Publishes it to the website, cross-posts it to the Facebook page, and announces it on Discord
- Makes separate promotions/announcements of any news - e.g. new timetables, special events - to the relevant places (Facebook page/groups, Discord announcements channel)
- Acts as support role for any big events that need an extra hand to organise - e.g. the Megagame, the big RPG, the Escape Room, the AGM
- Maintains the main Facebook page, and helps maintain the individual Facebook groups alongside the relevant reps
- Keep an eye on the society’s communication channels - the email, Discord, and the Facebook page inbox
- Delegates the answering of messages to those who are most knowledgeable (and makes sure they answer them) - i.e. Wargames-related questions should be answered by the Wargames rep.
My testimony:
Hi, I'm Fern, and (as you might have guessed from the byline at the end of every newsletter) I've been this year's Communications and Operations Officer! This means I've been writing every newsletter and sorting the society's Discord and Facebook announcements, but it also means I've been a spare pair of hands at a lot of larger society events. These two things combined helps showcase one of the coolest parts of Co-Op, which is how much you get to engage with all different parts of the society - I learnt X-Wing basically off the back of writing about it in the newsletter! Just like the reps, you've got a consistent amount of work every week, but unlike the reps you also get to have some fun with the newsletter, such as Ares' frogs or my various end bits.
More generally, if you're curious about being an exec member, you should definitely consider running! It's a lot of fun, helps broaden your skills, and gives you a chance to give back to the society. If you have any questions about Co-op, about being an exec more broadly, or if you just want to show me a cool frog, feel free to PM me on Discord (@AceEmpress#9631) or just ask me in person!
Next, it's Web Admin!
- Maintains and improves the society website
- Facilitates suggestions from exec and members as to how the website needs modifying
- Facilitates bug-reporting and squashes any bugs that pop up
- Works with various exec and members to ensure the website is updated with appropriate content.
- Ensure Events are correctly updated and archived appropriately
- Ensure the timetable (and associated google calendars) are kept up to date
- Ensure that static pages are kept accurate
- Manage the moderation of the forum, including spam removal and pinning
- Deal with data requests, and account requests
- Leads the management and moderation of the Discord server
- In cooperation with the Vice President, maintains the society Google account, including the drive and calendar.
- Maintain oversight of society GDPR compliance
Finnbar's testimony:
Hi, I'm Finnbar and I've been your Web Admin for this year! My main job has been to update the website and act as lead moderator on our Discord server - although the role just generally involves working with the society's tech. Outside of those main jobs, the role is fairly freeform so you can get involved in the technical aspects in any of the society's projects - such as our megagames, streams or something new that future execs decide on! (Also, getting involved in exciting society projects has been a lot of my time in my four years of exec, which has been great - so being involved in those projects isn't just a Web Admin thing.)
If you've got any questions about the role, feel free to contact me on Discord (finnbar#1659) and I'll be happy to answer! Also, it should be noted that there is currently a motion to update the exact description of the role on the AGMs thread, so you should check that out if you're interested in running for the role.
🎲 Game Design Collab
We have a collab with Game Design Society over the Week 5 weekend (Fri 11th-Sun 13th Feb). This collab gives you the chance to make your own tabletop game in a weekend "game jam", where people make games quickly to fit a theme and try them out at the end! If making a game is less your jam (ha), we'll be playtesting the games at the end of the weekend so you'll have a chance to try out your friends' creations. I'll have more details in announcements and next newsletter once we have a schedule and when I'm not rushing a newsletter on very short notice.

💭 What happened last week? 💭
Board Games Weekend happened! Many good birbs (such as the aptly-named Splendid Fairywren) in Wingspan, wild stories in Microscope, some absolutely ridiculous Tabletop Golf (in which Anakin managed to get a par 2 in a very reasonable 9 shots), and "surprising" amount of infiltration by 40k players thanks to Reylynn's intro event.
Above, you can see the winners of the painting competion Reylynn organised! The skull-decked and clawed marine was painted by Adam, and the terrifying floral friend Gregorgy (who glows in the dark!!!) was painted by Uke.
Ares sorted the netrunner tokens! From left to right, top then bottom, here's a list of what they actually are. [1]
- The 5s and 1s are little abacus bits that you use to make your own score tracker.
- The little "Bomb" tokens are actually used to track the day-night cycle - because netrunner is set in the future there are mutiple planets and so you need multiple tokens.
- The Brain emojis are used to indicate to your opponent that you aren't blanking them, just thinking about your next move.
- The Targeting screens are meant to represent either computer sales for the Corp or how many computers you own as the Runner.
- The weird hexagons are not cursed! They are in fact damned, the difference is very important, don't get them confused!
- The proof of purchase token is the only thing keeping FFG from finding us. If it is ever destroyed, close the windows, lock the doors, and brace for the imminent arrival of War-Lawyers.
[1] I don't actually have a citation and may or may not be lying! Come to CCGs to find out!
Extra Bonus End Bit
Taking a week off because it's Monday as I write this and I am only finite.
Wash your hands, stay safe, and come play some games with us 💛
Fern (she/they/fae, Communications and Operations, definitely didn't only start writing this after Board Games Weekend!)
