Yet another necromancer is trying to make flesh golems!!
Dr Rigg had learned of a Doctor Vrenos (a specialist in combining physiology and death magic) during his research into trying to bring back the dead. He set out alongside Milly, Reverend Dr Nightscream and Cornelius Jack set out to find his laboratory somewhere near the shining coast.
As they began their journey they encountered a recruiter for a nearby mine alongside a number of guards. After convincing a few of the guards to quite the party killed the recruiter and chief guard for being slavers. Travelling onwards the party came upon a bridge being guarded by two people who were very insistent it did not exist. After being paid off by the party they let the party use the bridge. A bit further down the path the party met a banker and his bodyguard who were looking for some money they had lost. The pair were being helped by a couple of the guards the party had previously convinced to quite who were trying to get a job. Riggs took the guards aside and gave them a couple of silver coins so they could claim to have found the money and get a job. When they returned with the coins the banker took the money and generously paid them a copper each. Offended by this Riggs gave them some more money and the party continued with their journey.
Later the party came across a group of imps trying to form a business with a pyramid like structure. Having forgotten to decide what they were selling the imps tried to sell the party a twig much to Riggs annoyance. Cornelius Jack who had been hiding then murdered one of the imps causing the rest to begin loudly mourning the death of their compatriot. This was then ended when they realised they could try and sell the body which they continued to try and do as Cornelius Jack slowly killed them all one by one. After this the party found someone raising money for a charitable venture where they paid the mining companies to treat their workers better; Riggs paid them a few coins and when the charity worker attempted to elicit more donations via a gun Rigg made it very clear that this method would end badly.
Then the party came upon a group of Lords of the Sea whom had a life mage amongst their number. Drs Rigg and Nightscream immediately began arguing about how mundane medicine is clearly superior to the magical kind and only someone who lacks the needed talent to practise medicine would resort to using it. After this the party were ambushed by a trio of drop bears who exhibited the strange ability to drain the life of those they attacked. After some study the party determined that they had been modified, likely by Dr Vrenos. As they continued on they encountered a group of people trying to see who could sail a boat faster… whilst on land. For obvious reasons this did not lead to any conclusive victory. Soon afterwards whilst the party was travelling Milly began seeing Miller. As she was talking with Miller the mind fragment which was mimicking cast doubt as a group of bandits ambushed the rest of the party. After defeating the bandits Riggs interrogated the a mage who had been amongst their number who informed him they had bound a mind fragment to help create a distraction for their ambushes but that when they were knocked down in the battle it had been released. After being promised the mage would not attack them Riggs got them back on their feet before having the entire party drink elixirs to ensure the mind fragment could not influence them again. The party then once again met the pair of guards whom they had convinced to quite at the begging of the adventure, having found the money the banker had been looking for they had invested it into a bakery which they were now running.
However, the joy and whimsy was short lived as after this encounter they were accosted by a massive monstrosity of flesh which had seemingly been made by melding together two people. Although it had very limited mobility due to having a number of redundant limbs its incredible strength still made it a challenge for the party. After slaying it Reverend Dr Nightscream and Dr Riggs took some time to critic its sloppy design and inefficiency like normal well adjusted members of society. The party then came across a reeve who had been sent to the shining coast in search of a missing noble. Unfortunately for him most locals to the shining coast have a distaste for reeves and he had had to give up his arm as collateral for his docking fees and when the party found him was being offered a truly extortionate rate for some water. Riggs who took offensive at this gave the reeve some water for free before discovering the one selling the water was a smuggler who ran supplies for Dr Vrenos. He convinced the smuggler to hand over a map to Vrenos’ base in return for recommending the smuggler to his ‘contacts’ in the mercenary companies.
With this map in hand the party set off into the desert where they found a merchant trying to sell his wares when the motion fragment which had been released appeared and attempted to cast a spell on the party. Fortunately, the elixirs they had drunk made them immune to the effect. Later they were attacked by a group of wet ghouls, which are like normal ghouls except there is salt water pouring out of all of their orifices, which they defeated. Then they came upon more of Vrenos’ experiments whom were all begging for death. One of them had arms for legs and legs for arms, another had had their arms replaced with a sword and a third had been turned into a lump of flesh. After receiving directions from the poor souls the party began fulfilling their wishes however, found that the blob of flesh was immune to all normal attacks. Fortunately, Jack’s life drain could damage the blob and so they managed to kill them all.
Finally, they approached the cave where Vrenos lived they managed to talk their way past the guards by using the map as proof they were meant to be there. When they entered they saw Dr Vrenos’ accompanied by a massive 7 ft tall flesh golem as well as a number of smaller creations. Dr Rigg and Nightscream took began bargaining with Vrenos for his notes and he agreed to explain his research to them in return for bringing him 3 living mages so he could use their body parts to construct more flesh monsters with magical abilities. Deciding that that was a bit too far even for him Dr Rigg then began attacking Vrenos whose flesh minions came to his defence. When he started getting injured Vrenos attempted to run but was knocked down by Rigg causing the large flesh golem to go berserk. After slaying the beast the magic holding it together was released in a burst of necrotic magic. Dr Rigg then interrogated Vrenos about what he knew, stole his research and then left him to die slowly.
Last week in RPGs
This week, in the Pokémon Valoryn Region:
After just beating up the first gym and catching some new Pokémon, Hinata, Elara, and Alden were standing there, pleased with themselves, when a Ranger rushed to them, seemingly panicked. They told us to get back inside the town, Eldergrove, before the fire spread too much and we got caught in it. Since apparently somebody started a fire. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't any of us four this time. After some debating, the three of them decided that yeah, it would be a good idea to go back to the town instead of swimming in the lake until the fire puts itself out. So they all went back to the town.
Hang on. Three? Wait, where's Rico? Unfortunately, the Ranger didn't manage to find Rico, it seems, so he didn't know about the fire that was spreading, so he didn't come back to the town. What happened to him? Nobody knows, honestly. Maybe he lived; maybe he died. Maybe he's just out there in the forest still searching for a Rare Leek. In fact, maybe he'll appear right back in the town next session. That would be crazy.
So anyways, two of the three most important members of the party and that other one had a bunch of time to kill in Eldergrove. The first thing they did was go to the library and read some books. They learnt more about the cult that tried to kill them they kinda tortured a bit had an encounter with once or twice. They learned more about the Legendary Pokémon of the region - Valoryx and Sylthara, the Pokémon of Order and Freedom respectively. And they also learned a bit about the Valorian forms of Pokémon, like the Valorian Oddish and Valorian Dratini that they had. After reading for like a couple hours, or maybe a couple minutes, Hinata and Alden were very bored. So they went outside, looking for kids to mug- wait, sorry. Looking for competent trainers to battle. And Elara followed them out, probably reluctantly. Sadly, it seems like the gods were against them that day, since nobody agreed to a battle since it was "too late" or some bogus. So the party decided that they should go to sleep, so Hinata promptly got out her sleeping bag and fell asleep on the pavement on the road. And then the poor, long-suffering Elara had to pick her up and carry her back to the gym, which was where a bunch of people were bunking down for the night.
So, they got to the gym, and Alden and Elara fell asleep. Some unknown amount of time later, they all woke up in a place that was very much not the gym. It was quite weird, honestly. Like, very foggy, and... just odd in general. So they do the obvious things, of Hinata training everybody's Pokémon and Alden climbing a tree.
Honestly, it was pretty impressive the way Alden climbed that tree. He... did some kinda bonkers acrobatics with his Clobbopus. I still don't know exactly how it works. I can tell you how he got down, though. After calling out to Elara down below that he got a 3 on his check so could only see 3 metres in front of him, he decided to try and get further out by walking along the treetops. Needless to say, it didn't go very well for him. He fell... I think it was about 13 metres. Took 160% of his HP in one hit. Didn't die, but got knocked badly unconscious and took four Injuries. And then... his body sunk into the ground, and he reappeared looking all healthy a few metres away. Odd, that. Ah well - I'm sure it's nothing to worry about! The party, led by the one sensible one left Elara, then went exploring this strange place. They found an odd looking field that, when they went in it, showed them and everybody else a warm memory from their past. Lore drop amirite?
And in the middle of that field was a deer-like looking thing. It was Sylthara, the Legendary Pokémon of Freedom.
It told us its story - about how some 5000-odd years ago, it lived in relative peace with The Lorax Valoryx, until one day, the Order Nation attacked, and Valoryx started trying to restrict freedom or something? Something something facism something, or close to it anyways. Sylthara's solution? Seal Valoryx away and give everybody perfect freedom to do whatever. So, libertarianism. Elara then spent an immensely large amount of time arguing with Sylthara about how no, this is not a good idea, idiot, what are you doing, you're both wrong, imbeciles, and eventually she gave up and tactically retreated from the argument.
Sylthara basically wanted us to help stop Valoryx from being awoken again, which is what the cult from before is trying to do. And it wanted us to stop it so that... we can force libertarianism on the world? Sure, buddy, okay. If you can convince Elara, I'll go along with it, but good luck convincing her.
There was also like a big weird mind-control crystal made by Sylthara in that field - an emulation of the ones made by Valoryx. So Alden was like "okay cool let's go and touch this!" so went and touched it and quite literally disappeared and heard a voice telling him to "SUBMIT". Sadly, Sylthara helped him out and he didn't, like, lose his free will for all eternity or anything sad like that.
Oh yeah Sylthara also apparently knows Hinata? But she doesn't know them. So this Pokémon is both a libertarian and a stalker. Maybe we really shouldn't get involved with this jazz.
So, after hearing all this, the party then woke up properly, back in the gym, and magically Rico had appeared next to them.
