New term, new timetable!
Our weekly events are back - and there has been no change from last term. We're still 100% online given the circumstances, and all of our weekly events are held via our Discord, so if you want to join in, please go join that!
Check out the timetable images below (or you can alternatively check out our schedule page) for both our weekly events and Magic: the Gathering draft. Here's a plain text breakdown too:
- Mondays 5-10pm: Online Wargames
- Tuesdays 6-10pm: Online Draft, with sign ups hosted on our website events page
- Wednesdays 5-10pm: Online Board Games
- Thursdays 5-10pm: Online CCGs
Introductory RPG One-Shots are THIS SATURDAY!
This Saturday (16th Jan), from midday, via website sign-ups and Discord
One introduction at the start of Term 1 just isn't enough - so we have another Introductory RPG One-Shot event at the start of Term 2 too!
If you have ever been interested in trying out Role-Playing Games (RPGs), including (but not limited to) Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), this is your chance! Tabletop RPGs are something of a precursor to modern-day video games, where a group of friends gather around a table to experience and interact with a thrilling story devised by a Dungeon Master (DM). The DM for the group will guide the players through a story they themselves created, whilst facilitating any interactions they wish to make with the world within the story.
This session is a "one-shot" - in other words, a one-off, self-contained story is told in each game. Our typical sessions are "campaigns" - where the story continues over many sessions/weeks over the year. As such, this is by far the best chance to try an RPG without an extended commitment. All you need is a good imagination - newcomers are very welcome! Your DM will be able to guide you through how to play.
How to sign up to a one-shot:
- First, sign up to the main event on our website's Events page.
- Then take a gander through all the individual one-shots available on our Events page - they all have titles starting with [Intro to RPGs 2] so that you can easily see which ones are available!
- If there's a game you wanna join in on, sign up to it! That's it, you're all set. GG!
It's the term of democracy
For those of you who don't know, Term 2 is jam-packed with democracy - it is the term that most societies, including us, hold their exec elections!
Every exec role (check 'em out here) will be up for grabs during our annual elections, and (having been an exec member for 3 years now), I'd like to gently encourage you to stand for a position! Being part of our exec allows you to give back to the society by running the weekly events that you love, organising and putting on our super special big events, and influencing how the society moves forward and grows in the future. And if that doesn't persuade you, it doesn't look half bad on your CV too.
If this piques your interest, the first step is to talk to the current exec of the role (or roles, yes you can run for more than 1 role) you're interested in! They'll be happy to give you a rundown of what their role entails, and answer any questions you have. You can also listen in to any of our exec meetings on Discord to get an insight into how we run the society. Additionally, from next week onwards I'll be advertising each role that's available in the newsletter, including a breakdown of duties and a testimony from the current exec, so keep an eye out for that - you might discover that you fit a role that you hadn't considered before!
Our AGM (Annual General Meeting, the place in which the elections take place) and voting will be run entirely online this year, due to the current circumstances. It is usually run during Week 8, but further announcements about this (when, where, how) will be made in due time.
You can now link your membership to your Tabletop website account! Yay!
This is just a small announcement on behalf of our wonderful web-whizz Thomas: you can now edit your Tabletop website profile to link your society membership to it (this may come into play during election season).
All you need to do is go to your website profile, hit the edit button, and then the shiny new "verify membership" button. You input your University ID number, then bam, you get an email (via your Uni account). Confirm that, and you're all set!
As always with website features, if you come across any bugs that need squashing, please drop Thomas a line and they'll do their best to find a fix.
What's happening this week?
- Monday 5-10pm: Online Wargames
- Tuesday 6-10pm: Online Draft - Amonkhet - free! (as it's online) - you must sign up here to take part
- Wednesday 5-10pm: Online Board Games
- Thursday 5-10pm: Online CCGs
- Saturday, ~midday onwards: Introductory RPG One-Shots! Scroll up to the announcement above for the full deets.
Remember, you can always find an up-to-date timetable of what's going on on our website's Schedule page, and you can see special events (including RPGs) and sign up to them via our Events page.
What happened over the holidays?
While regular events weren't running in the same capacity that they do during term-time, this didn't stop people gathering for some more informal gaming fun. Including a 5D chess tournament? This is the kind of thing that happens in the #boardgames
channel, I guess...? GG to Finnbar for winning!
Our secretary, Anakin, has now updated all the exec meeting minutes, written records of everything that goes down in our exec meetings which are available to read on our website, so you can give those a peruse if you are so inclined.
And to end this week's newsletter, I want to let you all know that you will be seeing some small changes here and there to the newsletter soon :O A big thank you from me to the 14 people who responded to the newsletter survey, your feedback is very much appreciated <3 the frog love also made me very happy. Hopefully you'll like the new set of self-care frogs this term too!
Things should hopefully start picking up again this week, so make sure to come on down to one of our events to take a well-deserved break from work and have some fun!
Wash your hands, stay inside, and come play some games with us (online) <3
