🔮 Reminder - Social gaming with the Warwick Magic Society is THIS FRIDAY!
Friday 12th February, 8-10pm, on Discord
RSVP to our Facebook event
We're collabing with Warwick Magic - a society for anyone who appreciates/wants to learn magic tricks - to bring you a social gaming night this Friday! We'll be playing Jackbox and Among Us on our (i.e. the Tabletop Society) Discord from 8pm, so grab some dinner beforehand then come join us for some games.
If you're interested in Warwick Magic, you can check out their SU page, their Facebook, or go join their Discord. And, of course, you can chat to some of their exec/members at this gaming night.
📝 The AGM Exec Low-down 4: Wargames and Board Games
Reminder: the AGM is being held on Wednesday 3rd March, 7-9pm, online over Teams (click this link to join the Team)
The Week 2 newsletter gives a full breakdown on how the AGM is working, so go read that if you haven't already. We also have the formal duties of each exec role listed on the exec page on our website. Additionally, you should have received a special AGM newsletter to your uni email if you're a society member (which you can also read the content of here) - go give that a lil read if you haven't already.
Continuing on with our weekly low-down on the individual exec roles, this week brings details for the Wargames and Board Games reps.
The Wargames rep:
- Runs the weekly wargames session on Monday evening
- This includes welcoming and teaching new players, as well as ensuring established players are getting games.
- Is responsible for the wargames equipment and budget. This includes:
- Purchasing new equipment when needed (this includes minis, armies, terrain, playmats)
- Keeping an inventory of wargames equipment that the society owns
- Moving equipment to and from storage
- Runs extra wargames-themed events, including:
- Tournaments, during sessions or as standalone events
- Terrain making and/or painting sessions
- Runs the wargames Facebook group
- Makes the weekly “who’s bringing what” announcement
- Facilitates ideas and works towards improving any wargaming related activities the society does.
Jon's testimony:
I’ve been the society Wargames Rep for nearly two years now? It’s been a blast. I’m just gonna outline a couple of my favourite aspects of this role.
The biggest part is of course, getting to organise and run the events. From our Monday Wargames sessions to termly special events, it’s just great fun seeing people enjoy the hobby. The larger gaming events give the chance to see people’s collections in full, and terrain-making days allow us to personalise the terrain that we play on.
I also find managing the society equipment to be really rewarding. While we unfortunately haven’t been able to make use of the society equipment this year, we do have a full cupboard of mats, armies, and crafting supplies. In maintaining and expanding this collection, you have freedom to seek out additions so that we may better support newer players who may not have bought into any specific game, or introduce existing players to other systems they might not have otherwise tried.
To those concerned about a time commitment, set your worries aside. You do not need to play every single week, I have spend many Mondays doing essay work to the backdrop of dice and measuring tapes. The role is one of bringing people together, providing a place and the equipment to enjoy the hobby.
If you’re considering running for the position, I (

) would be happy to answer any questions you have. See you at the AGM!
The Board Games rep:
- Runs the weekly board games session on Wednesday afternoon.
- This includes welcoming and teaching new players, as well as ensuring established players are getting games.
- Is responsible for the board games equipment and budget. This includes:
- Purchasing new equipment when needed (this includes board games, replacement parts and protective parts, such as sleeves for popular games, as well as storage solutions)
- Keeping an inventory of board games equipment that the society owns
- Moving equipment to and from storage
- Keeping a record of items that have been lent out
- Runs extra board games-themed events, including:
- The board games and tabletop weekends
- Runs the board games Facebook group
- Facilitates ideas and works towards improving any board gaming related activities the society does.
Alex's testimony:
Do you like Board Games?
Do you want to teach and play them every week?
If you answered yes to the above then you may be interested in the Board Games events rep position. In this role your primary job is to run Wednesday Board Games. This is not a chore but a joy if you live breathe and eat Board Games like I do. The one thing you may find painful is the time you lose from uni work, but don't fear that, Board Games and teaching them is proven to enhance and upgrade your studying experience [citation needed]. So please, come and apply. It's great fun, you'll probably make some friends and it will give you some great experience at organising events 😄

💭 What happened last week? 💭
The sun sets on another successful board games weekend. This one was particularly lively - we had a game of Here I Stand, Goblin Quest, and a Magic: the Gathering Vintage Cube Draft all going on in addition to the usual board gaming and late night Jackbox.
Board gaming featured a game of Spirit Island, in which there were two consecutive turns of double fear cards, death mountain (pictured right), and a final turn wherein there were three fear cards on the track, including the winning one (which was simultaneous with killing the last city, for style points). Benji proceeded to try to sell holiday packages to death mountain (despite the ongoing pandemic):
"Welcome to the most populated, but also least dense city you'll find on this virgin continent: Death Mountain. Home to many pioneering explorers that got lost and/or pushed here by supernatural power, Death Mountain features one of only two towns on the entire island, and the only city! Feel the atmosphere, as we all quake in our boots, ready to leave the moment this last bastion of our colonial might crumbles beneath an onslaught we still don't understand.
Buy your tickets today!"
Jackbox featured a post-it drawn on a post-it, ❤ynx, the gender orb (the nemesis of the gender cube), and Hatsune Miku. If you want to join in on more Jackbox, remember to come along to our gaming collab with Warwick Magic on Friday night [not an ad read] 😉
If you're interested in the seeing the game of Here I Stand, it was actually streamed (woah) - and you can watch the vod on Twitch!. Sam also gave some highlights of the game:
"Some fun moments: France breaking themselves against a single unit in Metz 3 times and still they held out. The Papacy threatening to "execute" Martin Luther (as opposed to excommunicate). England seeing France getting invaded by the Holy Roman Empire and saying "well in that case I'll declare war on France too". The Papacy ignoring the religious war for two turns in favour of warmongering. Protestant's worst debater continually winning debates. The Papacy making a deal to ensure one of their "bad" popes died a premature death. Charles V heading to Italy to get his official coronation, and then getting stuck there for the rest of the game due to gout. Oh yes and Vienna ended the game under Ottoman political control and Protestant religious control. So not a good time for the Hapsburgs..."
A big congratulations to J for their win for the Protestants 🎉
Vintage Cube once again proved that Black Lotus is Good Actually (see left for a turn 3 screenshot as a result of a turn 1 Black Lotus).
... And finally...
WHAT HAPPENED IN GOBLIN QUEST? (THE PREQUEL TO CRASH PANDAS 2) - a story by Finnbar, the GM
In this second outing of Goblin Quest, the goblins decided that they would work out how to time travel. (Yes, the players decided this, it's all done entirely through improv.) This went as well as you'd expect a group of weak goblins doing science way beyond them would go, that is, 18 of the 25 goblins died (through such means as angering a cinema clerk, "duck go fast and tiny goblin go boom" and taking déjà vu too seriously) and the rest managed to travel fifteen minutes into the future.
You can find the beautifully designed character sheets over in our Discord by following this link, and you can similarly find the full (riveting) summary of the game by following this link.
Congratulations for making it to the end of this novel. Hopefully there'll be some more shenanigans to talk about after Friday night!
Wash your hands, stay inside, and come play some games with us (online) 💛
