When Miratel was sacked by the forces of Quexxlia, some of its inhabitants were able to flee across the ocean to Dimbernel, where they eked out a meagre existence in refugee camps. Their nominal leader was Dr Jan Zephyr, who had heard rumours of John Jefferson's attempts to bind the Centre of Magic to himself. As a result of these rumours, Zephyr became paranoidly fixated upon Jefferson, and believed him to be the source of all the calamaties affecting the world in general and the East in particular. He set out to bring down his nemesis and alert the world to Jefferson's iniquity, hampered only by his own diminishing sanity, failing health, and an inability to travel too far West without falling into a coma.
