A Heist by Candlelight

In the city of Doskvol, everyone’s a criminal. Corrupt police, drug peddlers, violent mobs. And, most importantly, daring thieves. People who say, “Go on, one last job” twice a week, or those who are new to the game and eager to prove themselves, or those who do it to support their families, or because it’s too easy not to, or because it’s downright good fun. The list goes on and on. And here you are. Thrust into the underworld of a Victorian-esque city teeming with spirits and ghosts, tasked with stealing an item of great value by a mysterious client, by any means necessary. The score of your lives beckons, if only you can get in there and take it.

So, are you in?

A Heist by Candlelight is a Blades in the Dark one-shot for 4-8 players that I am running for Term 2's Intro to RPGs. It's a game in which players take the roles of beginner criminals on the biggest Heist of their lives in the haunted, Victorian city of Doskvol, tangling with traps, ghosts, and the dreaded Spirit Wardens as your audacious heist unravels!

The game is very beginner friendly, with far fewer mechanics to learn than something like DnD, and is character led, with narrative, not mechanics, defining what actions you can take at any time. Having said that, this session is open to anyone with any levels of RPG or Blades in the Dark experience, and experienced players will have just as much fun with the system as new ones.

If possible, please bring 4 six-sided dice, some paper and pens. While all of these will be provided, I do not have enough to go around, and having your own makes things much easier.

The session will run for 5 hours, split as follows:
1.5 hours- Character creation + learning the system
0.5 hours- Break for lunch
3 hours- One-shot session
